Biomass has been hailed as the energy source of the future. What it provides is no more dependence on fossil fuels, contamination-free air from emissions, and is a simple and inexpensive renewable energy source. What a wonderful concept for the future of humankind. Intense studies of this possibility are being held using the Biomass Pyramid to trace the most beneficial time to tap this energy.
To understand this phenomenon it needs to be realized that the the planet's entire ecosystem system is involved. It involves all plants, animals, and mico-organisms that work together with other non-living physical factors concerning their surroundings. It concerns the conditions surrounding non-living materials and their response to other elements in the environment.
Over time, conditions continually change with such things as earthquakes, floods, and droughts. The survival of all species has been due to the ability to adapt to these changes. As a result, there have been some changes in biological structure and distribution of plants and other species. As a rule, these changes have been very gradual and occur over a long period of time.
In biomass, there have been gradual but very little changes over the years. Archaeologists have found plants preserved in rock formations that are almost identical to what we have today. This shows very little change in the composition or contents within the plants themselves over the many years of their existence.
To understand biomass pyramids one must understand that the pyramid structure builds on each level of interaction. It has been deduced that the lower levels of a pyramid produce more energy than when transformation reaches the top level. The two levels of this pyramid are labeled Biomass and Energy.
Both of these pyramids show the movement of biomass and its energy as it applies to the ecosystem. This is called the Law of thermodynamics, which states that energy can be transferred from one form to another. This law also states that energy can only be transferred, it cannot simply disappear. Using this theory, when an animal eats a plant its energy is transferred to that animal. In turn, when a human eats the animal the energy is transferred to them. However, as the energy moves through this chain it loses a great deal of its energy as some is used up each step of the way.
The Energy Pyramid represents the energy, which is available at different pyramid levels while the Biomass Pyramid shows the abundance of organisms at each level. There are many pyramids within these pyramids, but they are all related to the ecosystem of the planet and its energy as it relates to the Ecological Pyramid.
The Biomass Pyramid is interesting in that, if a person studies it, the relationship between biomass and energy is revealed. It helps define at what level of development the organisms are best used to produce energy that is needs to be utilized in energy transfer. Scientists are using these pyramids to determine which methods to develop to create the most effective energy possible.
